Myths & Whimsies
With my first ink drawing explorations in 2003 I knew that I wanted to tell stories, but not in a straightforward way. I wanted to develop a more stylized, abstracted, and symbolic language which I would have to discover as I went along. Gradually the preoccupations of my unconscious were revealed and the universal myths retold; the dualities of nature and city, the organic and the geometric, male and female emerged. A compulsive interest in patterning revealed itself. I was influenced by the psychological writings about myth and symbolism of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, my childhood love of Dr. Seuss books, Saturday morning cartoons, and readings in mythology and literature. My life-long interest in biology, my love of the beaches of Grand Manan, and ongoing preoccupations with the fecundity found in nature all came to light in these ink drawings.
