Encaustic & Mixed Media

Encaustic paint is made from a combination of purified beeswax, natural damar tree sap resin, and powdered or oil pigments. It can also be used in combination with pigment oil sticks. The wax mixture is heated and applied in liquid form to a wooden panel, then fused with a heat gun, tacking iron, or blow torch. Each layer must be fused to the one below. It lends itself well to the incorporation of photo transfers, collage papers, or other objects. Paintings can be highly textured, sculptural, or perfectly smooth. The translucent qualities of the wax medium, and the different effects that can be achieved with layering techniques, make it a beautiful and intriguing art medium to work with.
